The Bride’s Survival Guide: Responsibilities Of The Wedding Party

Who would not want a wedding that is memorable and romantic? To set a good mood, it is best to start with wearing the best wedding dress. The dress the bride wears gives a huge impact on the overall look and feel of the wedding. It is actually the most attractive and the one that captures most of the attention during a wedding. You cannot blame girls if they spend a lot of time choosing the gown to wear on their most special day. Of course, they want to be the queen and the most attractive woman on their big day, so giving it to them is only necessary.

The good news is, the bride has her entire wedding party behind her back, willing and always ready to give them a hand. To start the ball rolling, here is what the wedding party consists of:

  • Matron of Honor, Maid of Honor or the Bride’s Honor Attendant
  • Bride’s Attendants or Bride’s Maid
  • Best Woman, Best Man Or The Groom’s Honor Attendant
  • Groomsmen
  • Ushers
  • Parents of the Bride: Father And/Or Mother of the Bride
  • Parents of the Groom: Father And/Or Mother of the Groom
  • Grandparents
  • Officiant
  • Ring Bearer
  • Flower Girl
  • Readers
  • Train/Pages Bearer

The gender and age does not matter when choosing wedding party. The decision is the bride and groom to make.

Apart from the wedding party discussed above, there are also some wedding party specific for certain religions, and they are:

  • Chuppah Carriers: They are part of the Jewish Weddings wedding party. They are assigned to hold the poles of chuppah. A chuppah is a sacred wedding canopy that symbolizes the newly wedded couples new home. Most of the time, Chuppah Carriers are men but it can be any 4 people close to the couple’s heart
  • Hattabin: This is the attendant of the groom for Muslim weddings
  • In other Christian weddings, teenagers serve as the Candle Lighters. They are walking ahead of the bride and groom’s mother and they will light the candle in the altar

Each of the wedding party has their own role to do during the wedding. But traditionally, they have a work to do before, during and even after the wedding. Here are some of their tasks to consider:

  • The entire wedding party if possible can help the couple with different planning responsibilities like craft projects, running errands and addressing invitations. The couple can also seek for their advices and help in making major decisions about the wedding
  • They are asked to wear a specific attire so they will be recognized separately from the crowd. The design and the theme of their dresses styles depend on the couple’s discretion and chosen wedding theme (the expense may or may not be shouldered by the couple)
  • They are also there to give both the groom and the bride confidence and comfort on the big day itself
  • They are most of the time invited to take photos with the couple either before the wedding ceremony or during cocktail time or both
  • They are most of the time seated in a special table, near the married couple or with them
  • Their responsibilities do not end after the wedding celebration, as it will continue after that. They are there to support the couple during their rough times, fights and arguments. They are there to remind the couple how much love they share
  • Most of the time if not all the time, the wedding party also organizes some of the special events before the wedding, such as bachelorette or bachelor party, bridal showers or most of the time wedding party surprises.

With everything that they do, it is only fair that you mention them on your wedding speech. They have spent a lot of time and effort just be there, so it is only right that they are recognized.

If you can spare a bit from your wedding budget, have a token to give away your wedding party as a sign of your appreciation and happiness for all the efforts and love they exerted.

Some of the items you can give away to the wedding party are:
